Warner Sworn In As Governor

Richmond, VA - Democrat Mark Warner took the oath of office as Virginia's 69th governor Saturday, and pledged to work with the Republican-controlled legislature to end the partisanship that resulted in last year's unprecedented budget impasse.

On the sun-splashed south portico of the state Capitol, Warner placed his left hand on the family Bible held by his wife, Lisa Collis, raised his right hand and was sworn in by Virginia Chief Justice Harry Carrico.  Warner and Collis were joined on the front row by their three young daughters.

Four Howitzers from a Virginia National Guard unit in Martinsville and Chatham fired a 19-gun salute.  Warner's inaugural address covered broad themes of working hard, daring to dream and reaching across political, ideological and cultural lines.
